Author Susanne Lord is a writer of Victorian-era romance and author of the London Explorer series published by Sourcebooks. Originally from Okinawa, off-bases and one, she now makes her home in Chicago where she is an active member of Chicago North RWA. When not writing, attending theater or reading, she enjoys hiking the English countryside and visiting historic homes and gardens.

What are your top 5 favorite things about writing romance?

Above all things, above signing with my first agent or selling my books or seeing my gorgeous cover for the first time, the best part about writing romance was the happiness my family showed me when I first revealed that I’d written a book and sold it. Then and now, they never let me feel they are anything but proud.

I love the look of surprise I get when I tell someone I write romance. I live in a liberal, artistic city, so the response is usually supportive and happy. If it’s less than enthusiastic, and if the person is open-minded, I enjoy the opportunity of enlightening them to the breadth and quality of the romance genre.

Writing has introduced me to dozens of authors, readers, librarians and historians, and they’ve expanded my life to a degree I never would have foreseen. My simple questions (simple to them) can reveal the most fascinating, surprising, counter-intuitive answers, and remind me again and again that ‘I don’t know what I don’t know.’

Plotting a book is like putting together a multi-layered puzzle. I don’t believe I’ll ever achieve perfection, but there is so much fun and satisfaction to be had in the attempt.

Unlike real life, I can guarantee my fictional characters will live happily ever after.
