I’ve worked with BrightLife Go and discussed the benefits of compression socks for those with diabetes, today I’m going to touch on the subject of legs swelling during travel before we begin packing for family vacations.

The Juzo Silver Sole Below Ankle Socks come in white with a gray sole or black. Before I get started… these socks are SO comfortable! They are perfect for sensitive feet. The below the ankle sock has a pillowed sole for added comfort, mid-foot compression and to prevent bunching of the sock, and channeled toe seams to reduce toe irritation (YES). With real silver which help eliminate bacteria and reduce foot odor. They’re made of 85% Cotton, 4% Nylon, 4% X-Static Silver, and 7% Lycra.

The Shockwell Women’s Orbital Compression Socks featuring 15-20 mmHg of compression and will be your new best friend during travel or during periods of having to sit for extended amounts of time. These socks are perfect to wear under slack or jeans and the selection of knees sock at the BrightLife Direct website is extensive! They are great for wearing day or night, at the gym, while traveling or running errands. These socks also help to minimize varicose veins, prevent ankle and leg swelling, and reduce fatigue. And they’re made of 34% superfine merino wool ( or cashmerino as some would say) 34% Bamboo Rayon, 28% Stretch Nylon, and 4% Spandex which provides natural thermoregulation and moisture management, making these socks great to wear all day long. They are also naturally durable, antibacterial.

The Bamboo fibers help make this sock super soft and comfortable.

A non-binding welt top keep the top of the sock perfectly in place on your calf. I can attest to this fact! I’ve never once experienced any slippage while wearing my knee high socks.

Built in arch support keeps your foot comfortable and supported all day long.

Seamless toe closure ensures your toes won’t get irritated, no matter how far you plan to hike or walk during your ladies day out shopping.

Ultra light cushioned sole, is kind to your feet.

Manufactured in the USA.

When I travel afar or even spending the day running errands about town, I often end up with my lower legs and feet swelling, which makes it uncomfortable to walk when I first try to stand upon leaving the airplane or car. Often time to the point of feeling like I’m walking on pins and needles. I’ve even experienced swelling in my legs for up to 48 hours after a long flight. And this can be disconcerting when you’ve reached your travel destination and you have a long list of places you’d like to see and your stuck nursing sore feet and legs.

I found this information about what causes leg and foot swelling during travel at the Mayo Clinic website.

Leg and foot swelling during air travel is common and typically harmless. The most likely culprit is inactivity during flight. Sitting with your feet on the floor for long periods cause blood to pool in your leg veins. The position of your legs when you’re seated also increases pressure in you leg veins. This contributes to foot swelling by causing fluid to leave the blood and move into the surrounding soft tissues.

To relieve foot swelling during a flight.

Wear loose fitting clothing

Take a short walk every hour or so.

Flex and extend your ankles and knees frequently while you’re seated.

Shift your position in your seat as much as possible, being careful to avoid crossing your legs.

Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydrations.

Avoid alcohol and sedatives, which could make you too sleepy or unsteady to walk around the cabin.

Foot swelling isn’t a serious problem if it lasts only a short time. But excessive swelling that persists for several hours after you resume activity may be due to a more serious condition, such as a blood clot in the leg (deep vein thrombosis) — especially if the swelling occurs in only one leg and is accompanied by leg pain. If you experience these symptoms, seek prompt medical attention.

If you’re at increased risk of blood clots — because you’ve recently had a major surgery or you take birth control pill, for example,* consult your doctor before flying. He or she may recommend wearing compression stocking during your next flight.

I’ve been wearing my compression knee socks when running errands or if I know I will be sitting for long periods of time to help reduce the amount of swelling in my legs, and it’s been helping! After sitting for 2 1/2 hours during my granddaughter’s performance in the ballet of Peter Pan my legs didn’t protest when I went to stand after sitting for so long and then sitting in the car for a long drive home. I know I will be sporting my compressing support socks during my trip to Key West later this year. Yes, I said KEY WEST! I’ve been to Key West several times when I was driving a truck but never as a tourist! I’ll need to remember to snap pictures and post to so you can follow along on my sight seeking adventure!
