This week my memories are taking me down the lane to school!
A week or so ago I was invited to the Goodman Elementary School by two of my grandsons for Grandparent’s Day.
I accepted and was really glad I did, even though I was slightly hesitant to attend. Yes I have issues with those tiny desks along with some not so fond memories of bullying that went on even in grade school; but I digress as will leave that to another story. Once I arrived at the school the boys were more that a little happy to see me and I noticed that several of the children were still sitting at their desk when I arrived and yet still at their desks when I returned to the children’s rooms. Makes be think maybe the school should come up with a way to incorporate not only grandparents day but older school alumni. Thus giving each child someone to partner up with and enjoy the day.
Once the boys and I started on our tour of the school (set up in a scavenger hunt theme) we were approached by another little one near and dear to our family and she joined our little team. Did you know three children under the age of 10 can be quite informative and detail orientated. We traveled from classroom to playground, then stopped by the gym for a round of hula hoop which took us over to the cafeteria for refreshments and then over to the library.
During our scavenger hunt we happened to stop by the pictures hanging in the hall from classes long ago. We actually found pictures of several of my aunts, uncles and father in this group. Which originally lead me to believe our family had been in attendance for the past 4 generations. However once I was talking with my parents when we visited the other day for my father’s 71 birthday; they informed me my grandparents on both sided of our family had attended Goodman Elementary as well. Thus bringing our family total to 5 generations! My grandparents, my father, myself, all 5 of my children and now I have 2 of my 9 grandchildren attending this year, all right here in a small town in the Ozarks.
I’ll be visiting the school again tonight for the school carnival and open house, which will be a fund-raiser for the school. Sounds like a great cause to me!
