When The Flu Pays A Visit In Your Home, Strike Back With Pedialyte

Pedialyte is the #1 pediatrician and pharmacist-recommended oral electrolyte solution recommended for hydration.

I received compensation from Pedialyte for the following post, sharing Pedialyte’s information and my own experience.* Look for Pedialyte in the baby isle at your local Walmart.

There is absolutely nothing worse than watching your children and grandchildren suffer when they are ill. Do you know that feeling when you’ve given your child their dose of medication and after a bit they are running around acting like “I’ve kicked this flu thing you speak so quietly about.” Only to fall flat out from lack of energy after that sudden burst. Yeah, me neither.

As a mom, grandmother, and retired daycare owner I always consulted my “holy grail of medical books” when one of the children came down sick. However, I found a great Stomach Flu vs. The Flu chart over at Pedialyte.com (see below).

The best way to prevent the stomach flu is by taking the following steps:

Wash your hand often (and your children’s hands as well), with warm soapy water for 20 seconds (the length of the ‘Happy Birthday” song).

Disinfect doorknobs, light switches, remotes – truly ANY objects that are touched frequently in your home, including your phones, tablets, and faucet knobs.

Food can carry the norovirus too. Rinse fruit and vegetables (everyone at the store has handled your produce before you…), and make sure you cook shellfish thoroughly. Clean all cooking and prep areas before you start cooking and again after.

How long does the stomach flu last? And how do you treat it?

Since the stomach flu is a virus and not a bacterial infection, antibiotics can’t ‘fix’ the flu – it has to run its course and get better on its own. Symptoms usually last 1 to 3 days, but there is something you can do to feel better fast… REHYDRATE.

The seasonal flu is a respiratory infection caused by the influenza virus, ‘the stomach flu’ refers to several viruses that cause the stomach and intestines to become inflamed.

I keep a bottle or two of Pedialyte on hand year around as well as Pedialyte powder packs in the diaper bag or my purse because a body can become dehydrated easily and quickly not only during illness but when exposed to the harsh summer sun, exercise or while traveling, just to name a few. And in our home everyone prefers a different flavor so it’s a good thing Pedialyte comes in so many different flavors and forms to meet or families needs. And keeping the items I know my family will need on hand prevents us from having to make a supermarket run when we are ill, and spreading our germs far and wide.

Vomiting and diarrhea can prevent your body’s normal absorption of water and minerals, causing dehydration, which can make you feel even worse. Unlike household drinks, including water, Pedialyte is specially formulated to replace vital minerals and nutrients to help prevent dehydration due to diarrhea and vomiting.

Did you know household beverages like sports drinks, juice, and soda don’t meet medical guidelines for helping to prevent dehydration. Those types of drinks are too high in sugar on too low in sodium, which is an important electrolyte lost due to diarrhea and vomiting.

Pedialyte contains the medically recommended balance of sugar and sodium to promote absorption and helps to replenish more of what your body needs.

The key is knowing the proper way to rehydrate and what to stop taking in depending upon the circumstances, and the chart below can help remind us what to drink or eat during times of illness.

I really enjoy the convenience of the Pedialyte products, the bottles are perfect to keep on hand at home as well as the freezer pops, however, the powder packs and the single serve boxes are convenient for the diaper bag and while traveling. I alway have a bottle or two of water with me when I leave the house so the powder packs are a cinch to use while we are out and about.
