Potty Training Like An Olympian Athlete with Pampers Easy Ups

As A Parent We’ve All Been There, On The Potty Training Fence. Which Method Works And Which Method Will Work For My Child.

As a parent of five, grandmother of 11 (of which I helped train several), and retired daycare owner I can say without a doubt potty training will only be successful if your child is ready and willing to graduate from diapers to Easy Ups and then big boy/girl underclothing.

You can try every gimmick on the net and discussed in parenting books but truthfully the potty training “game” in an Olympic event. Are YOU committed to the long game and willing to accept days of backsliding and unexpected accidents, because if parenting has taught you nothing else its “be prepared and expect the unexpected.”

Do your research and make a game plan, if your approach isn’t working, try something new. Not everyone learns the same way. I’m a doer, once I’ve experienced trying a new-to-me experience, I can ofter times pick it right up. When someone “explains the situation to me without me being able to visualize, more often than not it will take me a couple of tries.

Most of my children were fairly easy to potty train. The following is the approach I used for my grandchildren and the children attending daycare.

Discuss potty training to get a feel “ready for training” or maybe wait another month.

Teach your child EVERY step of the process from DAY ONE. No, this will not overwhelm your child, it will give them a set in their mind routine “from start to finished” approach to potty training.

Head directly to the bathroom.

Push the step stool/box in front of the toilet. We used a custom made plain jane wooden box which would not tip over during use the way some step stool will and can be used to stand at the sink to wash their hands, by pushing the box across the floor.

Place the potty ring on the toilet.

Stand on the box and ready themselves for the potty, sit on the potty.

While the child is on the potty we talk about random things other than going potty to help relieve some of the stress.

Once finished, take care of clean up etc, then pull clothing back on and step down from the box. Hint* flushable wipes were a big help.

Remove the potty training ring, place the lid down on the potty and flush.

Push the potty training box over to the sink area and proceed to wash their hands. Then push the box back into its storage space.

Now… its time to do the YEAH I CAN DO THIS FIST PUMP AND END ZONE DANCE, once ALL of the steps have been completed. Each time they miss a step gently remind them about the correct order and pretty soon it will be old news. You will hear them running toward the bathroom pushing the box toward the potty and completing each step on their own without announcing they need to go; nothing sweeter than knowing they will are on the fast track to becoming independent.

Remember, be patient and trial and error is all part of the learning experience. Every child desires to be independent, let them, as it’s a growing experience and as a parent we all desire our children to grow into independent individuals being able to problem solve and take on the next learning experience.
