It’s that time of year once again I’ll be checking in with my family doctor for a complete check-up followed with a TB blood test. I was a daycare owner for years and it’s a standard test for our state, which my doctor still recommends for me since I have an impaired immune system.
During each of my previous TB tests I personally never received a false positive, although I’ve read about others who have. However, I was never a big fan of waiting for the results and watching for any skin reactions to the old test (sort of like watching paint dry with less pleasant results).
What is Tuberculosis (TB)?
Tuberculosis (TB) is an airborne, highly contagious, infectious disease caused by bacteria. The bacteria are spread through the air by a person infected with active TB when they sneeze, cough or even speak, with those nearby breathing it in. Roughly 30% of the world’s population is infected with TB.
The TB infection is usually chronic and inactive before becoming active. The is (also know a latent) state can persist for weeks, months or even years without any symptoms before developing into and active contagious disease. When it strikes, it primarily affects the lungs; however, it can also cause disease in any part of the body, such as the lymph nodes, bones, brain, and the eyes.
Currently, the most common form of diagnosis is a skin test that requires multiple doctor’s visits and can result in false positives, especially in those who have been immunized for TB in the past. This can be a tremendous time burden and generates subjective tests results open of interpretation by doctors. The skin test also requires injecting proteins derived from the Tuberculosis bacteria into the person’s body.
