Little Red Riding Hood is a fairytale loved the world over. Almost every child knows the story by the Brothers Grimm of the little girl who was lured from the forest path by the evil wolf. Now, everyone can rediscover it with this amazing and enchanting little book by French illustrator Clementine Sourdais, who gives a contemporary look to this traditional tale.
Created with loving attention to detail, Sourdais cut-out images give the book an extraordinary haptic quality that makes it a pleasure to feel and behold. Her unique setting not only make the woods, the big bad wolf, and grandmother’s house come alive on the page, but that can also be transformed into a dancing play of shadows on the wall. Held in front of a light and unfolded, this book becomes a true adventure in story time, inviting its young and old readers alike to marvel at and experience Little Red Riding Hood’s journey in a whole new way. Please excuse the gloves. Its down right cold here in the Ozark’s and my arthritis can only stand so much, hence the gloves.
Alphabetics, C is for cat? D is for dog? Not in this book! Here, Colossal Cornelius captures his companions with his camera and Daisy the diver dares a death-defying dip with dinosaurs.
In Alphabetics, each of the alphabet’s twenty-six letters is depicted with an awesome alliteration-not to mention an illuminating illustration, that will captivate and stimulate young minds.
Although the letters tales are meant to be humorous and fun, they also serve a commendable purpose. Complex words are introduced to expand children’s vocabularies and linguistic horizons. The book includes a glossary so the readers can look up andy rearm that they are unfamiliar with. (ARV $16.95)
Elsa and the Night; can one make friends with the night? In this story, Elsa can! How, many of you ask, could someone even meet the night? Well, one day Elsa is sitting at her kitchen table and, because she is bored, counting raisins in her cereal. She then suddenly hears a sound coming from under the sofa. When she investigates and catches the ting making the noise, she realizes that it’s neither an animal nor a ghost. It’s the night.
Because Elsa winds up hiding the night in her cookie jar, giving it a few or her raisins, the day outside doesn’t end. When she takes the night out of it’s hiding place, it has the chance to hear her talk about the adventures with their friend, an elephant named Olaf. Elsa tells the night that she is very sad because Olaf got sick and no medicine was able to help him. The night not only listens to Elsa, but also accompanies her on a heartwarming and moving journey where it cares for her, protects her, and finally carries her throughout the town in its arms. Issun Boshi; tiny and brave, these are the two most striking characteristics of Issun Boshi. His mother had longed to have a child for so many years that she finally added “even if it is a very small one” to her wish. When the elderly couple did in fact bear a son, he turned out to be only one inch high. He was thus called Issun Boshi, Japanese of one-inch boy.
Although his parents raised him very lovingly, Issum Boshi realized one day that he would not grow any taller. He then left his home to set off on a journey to find his place in the world. Because he saw himself as a sward fighter, a samurai, he made sure to take along the right equipment: a needle was his sward, a soup bowl was his boat, and a chopstick was its rudder.
As in proper fairy tale, Issun Boshi is tested in several adventurers. He handles himself so bravely, that in the end, he is rewarded with just the right princess. (ARV $19.95)
