This week my memories are taking me down the lane to… Christmas Trees!
I can remember a few of our family Christmas trees that graced our home when I was a child. Most of them were live cut trees. Ranging anywhere from large and full to skimpy; almost a remake of the tree in Charlie Brown’s Christmas program. I can remember our trees being decorated with the old glass type bulbs and ornaments alone with the original metal icicles. Do you remember those bit bulbs in the blue, red, white, orange and green; you always needed to be careful about how long you let them burn since they become hot to the touch and dangerous on a live cut tree.
I can remember a tree my grandma Ida had for years. Gives me the willies just thinking about it. This was back in the late 60’s early 70’s the tree was a table top type of tree; the wire rods that went into the center stand of the tree was covered in a tensile type material, I honestly can’t remember if it was silver or white. Then it came with little tiny glass ornaments that you hung on the “branched”. Man that thing was Uuug-ly, straight up ugly. To this day I never put those ropes of tensile on my tree just because of the memories of this little tricked out tree from my past. The tree was exactly like this one, except the ornaments were multi colored.
Over the years as and adult as the children were growing up we’ve had both live cut trees and artificial trees. During the lean years we even cut our own cedar trees from the fields.
I like the smell and appearance of a live tree; along with the feelings and memories that are always near during the holidays. However I see the usefulness of an artificial tree as well. Less hassle each year. Pay for the tree once and use it for years. And some of those pre lit trees are simply beautiful. Seriously I could spend a week trying to get my lights to look that perfect. And you know I would 😉
I’m still in the deciding stage for this years tree, live cut verses artificial pre lit.
Last year we had a live tree, let me tell you we had needles in abundance when I took it down the week after Christmas.
