I’m so happy to welcome you to another LeahSay’s Views and Planet Weidknecht Hop Event. During this event each of the bloggers will be showcasing a product that is made in the state they live in. How fun is that. We will also have bloggers talking about shopping local with gift cards available for shopping local in YOUR home town!
As most of you know I live in Joplin, Missouri, our town has a large industrial area as well as several of our sounding areas towns such as Neosho, Webb City and Seneca each located in Missouri. I’m going to mention a few of the areas companies manufacturing products you may or may not have heard about.
One of the very first companies to come to mind is the Seneca, Missouri Milnot plant. I can remember seeing the big Milnot can on top of the plant for as far back as I can remember. My mother, grandmothers and myself each have used Milnot sweetened condensed and evaporated milk in our families favorite dishes. Ranging from casseroles, fudge and holiday baked goods. I can remember my grandmother telling me they used Milnot canned milk for their small children, the same way we use formula for infants today.

Fun fact:The company was originally founded in 1912 as “The Litchfield Cremery Company” in Litchfield, Illinois by Martin Jensen. In 1915, Charles Houser entered the business soon followed by William Hartke. These men incorporated the company and built a new plant in 1916 at its current Litchfield location. World War 1 created a tremendous demand for dairy products for export for our allies and in 1919 the company processed mor the 23 million pounds of milk, primarily sold as sweetened, condensed, and evaporated. The company grew grew gradually during the 1920’s and in the 1930’s began manufacturing MILNUT.
Milnut was a new product to consumers, and for several years sales were slow. In 1932 Milnut operations started a rapid expansion under Mr. Hauser. Late in 1939 the name was changed to Milnot. An additional plant was purchased in Indiana in 1936 to increase sales. In 1946 a new Milnot plant was constructed in Warsaw, Indiana and production started in 1947. Also during the 1940’s, Mr. Hauser came to Seneca, Missouri and purchased land laying on the Missouri-Oklahoma line to expand production capacity. The Seneca, Missouri plant was opened for production in 1948. A brass floor marker is running through the plant donating the division of the states to this day. Today, all canned milk production has been consolidated to the Seneca, Missouri plant.
My grandfather and uncle both worked and the Seneca, Missouri plant and my uncle also retired from the Milnot plant.
I’m going to list a few more Missouri companies that I’ve either purchased their products or have another connection with in some way.
