I received a rural mailbox from Ace Hardware to facilitate my review.*
I received my new shiny rural mailbox before the holidays arrived, however due to illness and the “lovely” winter weather we’ve experienced here in the Ozark’s my post was delayed. Seriously, we finally had a day with above freezing temperatures with not too much snow on the ground AND I was feeling good so I corralled the guys and I may or may not of, placed a tiny guilt trip the guys, into installing my shiny new toy.
Why do I say my shiny new toy. Well for the past 2 years our postal person has decided that if one of my review boxes does not fit neatly into our old small-sized mailbox. They would drive up to the house and honk the horn for me to retrieve said package. Most of you know I walk with the aid of an arm crutch and well I’m just plain slow some days and if I’m having a bad day I’m really slow to arrive at the front deck of our house. If I’m not there quick enough the person in question, pulls up toward our deck steps and then tosses out my boxes. Yes, I said toss. I’ve reported the problem but they don’t believe me. And that is a grievance for another post. So… with this new super duper large rural mailbox from Ace Hardware I believe said person will be less likely to “toss” my packages on the steps, because most boxes should fit directly into this big boy {insert fist pump}.
Lucky for us the treated post we had in the ground would be reused and NOT need to be re-set into our frozen Ozark ground. However they did need to splice the base board for the mailbox to be mounted on the post, too ensure a solid connection and hopefully not needing any repairs anytime soon.
The guys used dowels to splice the two priced of treated lumber together, applied wood glue and clamped it overnight.
I had them place the wood on a plastic bag so the excess glue would not end up on my counter top. Yes, with our temperatures the wood and glue needed to dry in the house.
I removed the flag that was on the new mailbox when it shipped because Mr. wanted to move his red horse shaped flag onto the new mailbox. For this we needed to drill a new hole in the side for optimum placement of the flag; since it was configured differently that the original flag.
I also placed reflective tape and our house numbers on the box while I had it indoors, I wanted to make sure the tape set-up and held.
Now the mailbox is ready for placement on the post at the end of our drive.
Yes, even I can see those number without my glasses 🙂
As you can see we still had snow on top of ice the day the guys set the new rural mailbox.
