Week 20 #NSNation at @Nutrisystem: Thoughts vs. Behaviors

I’m down 2 more lbs this week! This brings me to a total of -33.5 lbs and -27.5 inches in the 20 weeks!

I noticed I have slowed down in my weight-loss. However I feel a lot of this has to due with my veering off the course of my diet for the past two and a half weeks. This week I did have lunch and dinner every day as well a breakfast most mornings. I will do better this week! I have my mind-set to become very strict with my diet once again. I will succeed! I will not let others opinions get me down, and I will march forward with my dream!

This week we will be discussing Mind Over Matter.

Thoughts vs. Behaviors

It might seem strange that when it comes to weight management, your thoughts are just as important as your behavior. Imagine, though, that last night you went off your meal plan while you were watching TV. If you thought, “I’ve blown it again; I have no willpower,” you’d probably feel discouraged about your chances for success. That could lead you to eat more or even give up your weight loss efforts completely.

On the other hand, maybe if you thought, “I gave into my craving and overate, but it’s not the end of the world. I’ll figure out how this happened, so I can keep it from happening again,” you’d feel productive and hopeful.

By thinking negatively, a lapse becomes a relapse (see last weeks post ); an off night becomes completely giving up. Setbacks happen; it’s what you do about them that counts. The first step is to change the way you think.

Thinking Styles

Thinking realistically about your efforts to lose weight and improve your health can really help you succeed. To do this, you’ll need to identify the different thinking styles that are unrealistic, and then learn healthy ways to counter them. Here are three destructive thinking styles:

All-or-None

All-or-none thinkers see things as either good or bad, healthy or unhealthy, allowed or forbidden. Any mistake is seen as total failure. To counter these thoughts, you need to allow for mistakes as part of the process. That way, you can recover from mistakes quickly, learn from them, and get back on track.

Negative Lens

With this type of thinking, one negative event or setback becomes more important than a whole pattern of positive events. For instance, after missing a workout session, a negative lens thinker would think, “I’m right back where I started; I’ll never be able to do this.” If you fall into this kind of thinking, don’t let one event overshadow your overall progress.

Don’t Worry, Be Happy

When faced with a setback, a “don’t worry, be happy” thinker would say, “This was a rough week, but next week will be better.” Sure, a positive outlook is great, but in the face of a setback, you need a plan for turning things around. Positive thoughts alone aren’t enough. When you’re trying to lose weight, plans work better than platitudes.
