My Childhood Food Oddities ~ Because Prompts are Fun!

promptsrfun

Have you ever stood in awe of the down right strange eating behaviors of your children or maybe wonder why they flat out refuse to even try new foods or even wonder how they came by their strange behaviors?

I can personally attest to the fact I’ve experienced many, I mean MANY meal time show downs with my (mostly my son) children (5) while they were growing up. At one point I was actually preparing two meals to serve at dinner time. One day I’d had enough! I told them they could eat whatever I made for dinner or make something for themselves. I did try to always make at least one item I knew my overly picky son would eat (macaroni and cheese, and to this day I can’t stand mac n’ cheese).

I can see my grown son struggle with his own children’s eating habits which always brings back memories of his struggles to try new foods. He will seriously to this day only eat a few things, which makes me ponder; how did I ever raise a child or children whose food tastes are so very different from my own.

I’m a veggie and fruit lover in a BIG way, therefore I seldom eat meat and I can honestly say I rarely ever crave meat at meal time with the exception of… bacon. I don’t know why but even when I went vegetarian for a few years I still craved bacon.

Growing up I can remember eating foods or food combinations that I simply shake my head in wonder, because most of these items I would never eat now.

In no particular order of gross factor or maybe junk food junkie goodness.

Fresh sandwich bread with white sugar sprinkled OK poured on top then folded in half. Nothing like a little sugar rush right?

Pickles, dill pickles. I like them on my grilled cheese (still do) I like to eat them straight from the jar. But I’m picky and want crunchy pickles. When I was expecting my second son I craved pickle juice, yep right from the jar. Let’s just say I don’t do that any more and leave it at that. 😉

Ketchup. Like most children I enjoyed dunking my french fries in ketchup until my hand was covered. I would never ever eat ketchup now. This story involves little white squiggly things coming out of the squeeze bottle in a restaurant; therefore ending my love of ketchup. {shiver}.

Crunchy Cheetos dipped in peanut butter. This was a favorite after school (before my mom got home from work) snack. I can’t even fathom eating this combo now.

Tuna Salad. My mother makes the best tuna salad sandwiches. Well I thought they were until I hit my 20’s, after that I just could not bring myself to eat tuna. Ever.

Peanut butter mixed with a little bit of pancake syrup or honey (our family had a surplus of honey since my wonderful grandfather was a bee keeper). After mixing spread this yummy goodness on fresh sandwich bread and dig in. I could eat this a few times a week growing up. I may enjoy this treat a few times a year now.

BBQ Ribs. As a child and up until I started my non meat eating phase I loved BBQ Ribs. Now, now so much, maybe a bite once a year and it a really big maybe. I don’t mind making them for others to enjoy!

Grilled Cheese sandwich lightly toasted. While it’s still warm spread smooth peanut butter on top. I craved these yummy delights while I was expecting my first son.
